A rant
Thursday, November 04, 2004

I suppose some people expect me to give a detailed post about the election and about all that jazz. Well, quite frankly I refuse to do so. I just can't be bothered. It is not that I dont care. I just dont care to write about it. I have had enough politics for a while, and I can assure you that I am sick and tired of talking about it.
So instead I will talk about something that does interest me: Music. We are at a dark time in history. Each decade has had its good and bad things, but they all had at least one positive thing going for them: The 60's had folk rock, the 70's had punk rock, the 80's had reggae, and the 90's had grudge. Sure, these categories have overlapped over time, but what do they all have in common. What have we always had up until now? Protest music. Historically, we have always had music that has protested the established norm and made society change. I firmly believe that music is one of the most important mediums to get a message out to the world, especially the younger generations. Every decade has had at least one group or musical trend that has said "enough! It it is time for a change!" But as I sat here in my room listening to Nirvana (a group to whom we are indebted to for pulling America out of the materialism of the 80's), it struck me that I could not think of any major voices and especially counter cultural groups that actually cared about the world.I mean, you know your world is going to crap when the trend is Emo. Sure we have a couple of people here and there that are pushing for a better world, but on a whole, we have no group that has risen up in protest. Older rockers like Green Day are forced to try to put out a meaningful album (and only half accomplishing it) to try to encourage a break with the established norm. I suppose we are in an era where we are seeing more voices within a subculture (like Pedro the Lion within Christian music), but I sure wish we would see the rise of a group of people united by a music that cares about more than teen angst. Yes, that was a rant.
