Snow, bowling and cast iron skillets
Sunday, November 14, 2004

It has been a couple of days since last I wrote something of substance here. This weekend has been a very satisfying one. Friday seemed like it might bring portents of bad times to come, but fortunately this was not the case. The omen that made me scared was the snow. Yes, we had our first snow on friday. It started as rain, and as the day got colder it turned to slush, and finally snow. Because of this slow progression, the snow was not even that pretty. Besides that, the rain from earlier in the day froze all over the ground, causing more than one person to fall embarrisingly.

Anyway the weekend breakdown goes like this: Friday I went to the freshman recital, which is where the freshmen music majors show their stuff. They are, of course, really bad for the most part, but it was fun to see the potential that many of them had. When I walked out, there were about 4 inches of snow covering the campus. I sighed, and tried not to think about it, instead focusing on the fact that I had something fun to do that night. I was able to spend some times with some friends with whom I had not been able to spend much time this semester. Renee, Lisa and I got in the car and decided to drive until we saw something spontaneous to do. Fate was on our side, because after driving around for a while we saw (through the falling snow) a neon sign saying "Bowling." Why not? we thought. It was an old school bowling place, where the pins were thin and small, and the ball was akin to that of 'Petanca.' In fact is was much like the bowling games you see outside in Cantabria and Asturias. Anyway, it was a lot of fun, and I think I enjoyed it more than normal bowling. After playing a game and fooling around with the jukebox, we drove to Dunkin Donuts (which originated up here, by the way). It was fun.

Saturday was pretty chill. It included hanging out with Rachel Peterson and watching a movie in her dorm room, for she was on duty and could not leave the building. I know how that is, so I went over to keep her company, because I am nice like that. It was fun to hang out with her, because I think she has mental problems, so we get along just fine. Later on that night, the guys in the apt. downstairs threw a crazy International Student's party, where RayNCo played an unplugged concert which rocked. Ray told me to pull out the trumpet for a couple of songs, which I did. It was fun, even though I had never played any of those songs before so I didnt try anything risky. I think it is the first time I ever played with a Reggae band, so that was neat. After the concert we pumped the techno and danced for a while, until the mexicans took over and put on salsa and merengue, which was my queue to leave.

Today I went to church with Rachel and then came back to my apartment. I was about to cook up a steak that I had bought a couple of days ago, when Brian (one of the coolest guys known to man, also one of my apartment mates) suggested that we go to the store to buy a cast iron skillet (which we had been talking about purchasing a couple days prior). So we went and bought what is probably one of the best purchases I have ever made in my life. That thing is awesome. We came back and seasoned it (which involves rubbing it with oil and letting it bake into it in the oven for an hour) and then cooking up some grub. We made chicken fried steaks. They were awesome. It is nice to have a friend who loves good food as much as I do. And now, I must do the homework that is due tomorrow. I will try to post some pictures sometime soon.
